Your Journey Begins: Resolutions for Gardeners

I know this is an American study. I could not find another more local one, but notice how almost 50% of respondents had no goals for the year. We are living in a time of turmoil and stress, but you can use your own space to invite a healthier more resilient lifestyle.

Gardening is the solution to your goals.

Gardening is a great source of exercise, burning 175-300 calories* every hour. That hour outside reduces your screen time, increases your engagement with nature (both proven again and again to reduce stress, and improve mental well-being)**. All that with the bonus of saving your hard-earned dollars from a gym membership or the worry of grocery prices increasing.
The spaces we have around our homes can be used to grow our own food or host dinner parties or to simply hang out with our four-legged friends after a busy day of work. Now if that doesn’t replace your stress with easily achievable goals with one easy change, I don’t know what will.
How do we eke out those spaces to engage with our yards?
- Give yourself permission to play in your yard.
- Design your space so it is less about traditional curb appeal and instead serves your own needs.
- You can have vegetable boxes for fresh tomatoes with a waterless lawn replacement filled with native plants and aesthetically placed stones.
- A great space begins with a functional design revolving around what inspires you.
- Design your space so it is less about traditional curb appeal and instead serves your own needs.
- Work with a landscape gardener or your local horticulture group
- They are great resources! Bounce ideas around and make your ideas work with the natural environment your yard belongs to.
- Getting the right plants in the right place removes the frustration of trial and error and saves you money.
- Hire a landscape company to do the heavy technical work
- You will have time and energy to do the tasks you love.
- Sure you can build that patio, but would you rather hire a crew and spend your efforts planting the flower pots or harvesting the lettuce for your weekend BBQ?
